SodaBottleOpenerWala – A Review

By: Ananya Majumdar (LTEN)

SodaBottleOpenerWala is located in “21st most expensive retail street in the world” i.e. 73, Khan Market, New Delhi. It is a popular destination for a casual dining experience.

A small door on the street opens to a narrow staircase with old photographs on the walls. The interiors will welcome you to a beautifully decorated Parsi tea and cookie stall(a kind you will have seen in Bollywood movies) with ample lighting. There is limited seating due to shut down of its outdoor seating. But, the manager is very generous to give a call, if you are in waiting and want to check out the market in the meantime. There is an instruction board mentioning clearly the hilarious Don’ts in the Restaurant.

The Menu offers Parsi cuisine with option among various Veg and Non-veg items. Due to use of some special herbs, the food has a unique taste. What’s best is that, they do not have too many items on the menu. Hence, its easy to make a selection. I had ordered “Aloo Aunty’s Vegetable Cutlet”, “Chicken Farcha” and “Kolmi Fry” for starters accompanied with “Masala Ni Chai” and “Pheteli Coffee”. Chicken Farcha is a chicken fry with a very thin and crispy coating and aromatic herbs. Kolmi fry was the most unique prawn preparation I have ever tried. The prawns were covered in crispy rings to reveal the aroma of the sea food. For all sea food lovers, this is a must try.  The Main Course included “Vegetable Patio” which is a sort of Bhaaji to be had with Pao, “Chicken Baida Roti” which is almost like the Mughlai paratha we are so used to but with touch of Parshi falvors, “Bhendi Bazar Seekh Paratha” which is Paratha served with juicy mutton sheek kabab and “Dhansaak (veg)”. Dhansaak became an instant hit due to its unique style of presentation in a 3 layered traditional tiffin dabba with Biriyani, Daal and Salad in each layer.

The food was served with minimum waiting time. The creamy coffee left me with a craving to visit the place once more. We savoured the taste of Parsi food which is so unique from the north Indian or Chinese food we are so used to.

The service was equally warm. We were immediately attended to by smiling waiters who guided us through the menu in complete detail.

The Price of the food is reasonable. A full course meal for two should at max range between Rs 1200 – Rs 1400. What came as a surprise was an additional 15% discount on Axis Bank cards (covered under Dining Delights Scheme).

Overall, SodaBottleOpenerWala is a great place to hang out with friends and have a great dining experience with food of exquisite flavours. For this reason, I would strongly recommend you to go to SodaBottleOpenerWala.
