“Behind every successful man there is a woman”.  This old adage is a perfect depiction of the truth even in today’s era. Women in the 21st century are involved in myriad diverse activities under pressure and high expectations. I might sound like an absolute feminist today , but why not?  After all it’s a month to celebrate feminism.

International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 every year. The day is celebrated universally as a token of respect, appreciation and love towards women. The day reminds us of celebrating women’s economic, political, and social achievements.

As the world gears up to celebrate Women’s Day today,  as an editor it’s my gentle request to briefly remind  you of the countless hurdles that a woman has to face in her life, the innumerable sacrifices that she makes for others and  unendurable  pain she suffers without complaining. She has to nurture life and seamlessly play different roles be that of a dutiful wife, obedient daughter, caring mother or an adoring sister, all at the same time. Once you realize that, I am sure you would start respecting and loving her more.

Moving on the month of March, it brings perhaps the happiest and most colorful festival of Holi.

‘Holi’ comes from the word “Holi” originates from “Holika”, the evil sister of the demon king Hiranyakashipu. The night before Holi, huge bonfires are lit at major crossroads in towns and cities and effigies of the demoness Holika are burnt to symbolise the triumph of good over evil.  The next morning is a free-for-all carnival of colours. Participants play, chase and colour each other with dry powder and colored water. Children carry water guns and coloured water-filled balloons and engage in water fight. It is everyone’s game, friend or stranger, rich or poor, man or woman, children or elders. The frolic and fight with colours occurs in the open streets, parks, outside temples and buildings. People share Holi delicacies including intoxicating drinks like bhang. The festival is a reminder that we must live our lives in a spirit of service and sacrifice. Most importantly it’s a day when we forget social distinctions completely.
