Serotonin-The Willpower Booster

By Prashant Bharadwaj (LMB)

Have you ever wondered why we are in a bad mood when we are hungry, or why completing a simple task makes us feel good or an exhausting process like running actually makes us feel refreshed?

Well, there has to be someone pulling some strings behind the curtain to make these feeling work and the quartet responsible for our mood, feelings, and happiness are Serotonin, endorphins, dopamine, and Oxycontin collectively known as happy hormone.

Scientifically speaking they are the neurotransmitters, not the hormones but for a common person, it doesn’t make that much of a difference as long as it keeps them happy 😉

So in this edition let’s dig into the details of Serotonin and find out how to enslave this chemical and stay motivated forever.

Serotonin helps to relay messages from one area of the brain to another. It directly or indirectly influences the brain cells related to mood, desire, appetite, sleep, memory, learning, social behavior. In short, it makes a person sociable and improves the mood.

With balanced serotonin levels, a person will be happier, calmer, more focused, less anxious and more emotionally stable but any kind of imbalance will cause loneliness, depression, anxiety, and insomnia.

Serotonin level in the body can be found out by tests but these tests are required only for the patient of severe depression and can only be ordered by a certified neurologist. So easier way to keep track of it and to maintain it will be some simple changes in daily life and to follow some common practices suggested by many doctors and research studies, some of these practices are –

1) Expose yourself to sunlight: When sunlight reaches our skin, we produce vitamin D which in turn helps produce serotonin.

2) Exercise at low intensity: Serotonin results from aerobic exercise and stays in the body even after the exercise.

3) Consume tryptophan with carbohydrates: As per the studies, foods like milk and corn contain tryptophan, which is converted into serotonin. Carbohydrates aid the conversion process.

4)Meditation: Meditating can relieve stress and promote a positive outlook on life, which can greatly boost serotonin levels.

These step will boost the Serotonin level which in turn will improve the attitude and behavior, however, a doctor’s recommendation is always better about some concerns.

Serotonin is responsible for many of the important functions and affects our attitude towards the things that get us through the day.  There are many other hormones effects picture as well that we will discuss in further edition till then stay motivated and be happy.
