TVF’s Yeh Meri Family

By Priyarupa Sinha (L&T MHPS)

Set in 1998 Jaipur, this slice of life web series is full of  nostalgia. The series takes you to a time that was delightfully uncomplicated and charmingly unpretentious. It connects with you on the most simplistic levels and yet leaves a profound impact.

The series focuses on the antics of the Gupta family, which comprises a mostly nonchalant, but sometimes grumpy father; a mostly soft-hearted, but sometimes annoyed, mother; and their mostly innocent, but sometimes impish children- the eldest son- bookish & bossy, Dabbu; the youngest- the endearing daughter, Chitthi; and the quintessential middle kid- sulky, yet adorable, Harshu . Apart from the Gupta family members there is Shanky- Harshu’s friend, philosopher and guide; his classmate and best friend; and also his go-to trouble-shooter for the myriad problems.

Harshu is the main protagonist and narrator, and we see the entire story through his eyes. The series captures the milieu of the ’90s perfectly throughout the episodes. The dialogues are funny yet pithy, leaving audiences reeling with a strong sense of déjà vu. The series has an amazing cast and reminds you of everything great about the Summer. The series showcases a distinctive Indian ethos, hitting a nerve here, touching a chord there, with its powerful play on emotions and familial love.

All in all, it is one show you definitely wouldn’t want to miss out on.
