Given how scorching the summers have been this year, everyone is eagerly waiting for the monsoons to arrive. And most cities have been lucky enough to receive a few drops of rain already, while some received more than expected and got flooded.
Monsoon is the most beautiful season in India. It is the season that brings happiness to our life (until it doesn’t cross its limit and doesn’t convert roads into lakes) as it makes nature cool after the hot and burning weather during summer. Rainy season allows you to experience beautiful moments like playing and dancing in the rain, the smell of the wet soil, watery sky and many more. But, even having the cool splash of the rainy day, this season also invites many health problems.
The kids and elderly people are more susceptible to the harmful effects of the monsoon season. The chances of having water-borne diseases like diarrhoea, typhoid, viral fever, gastrointestinal infections, and dysentery are very high during the rainy season. As the rain moderates the climate, which helps in increasing the growth of harmful germs and bacteria thereby increasing the chances for diseases and infections. Respiratory infections, cold, and flu are the most common problems during monsoon that needs to take care of. The people with low immunity need to take extra care during this season. People who are suffering from any disease should be more cautious. They can be infected by the bacteria which can cause extra diseases to them.
Everyone welcome this season with full joy and smile on their face but this happiness can be lost if we don’t take care of our health Therefore while enjoying the beautiful rainy season, it is important that you must take extra care of your health.
Here are some tips to prevent yourself from the unwanted part of the rainy season.
Getting wet in the rain
Most people get wet in the rain intentionally or unintentionally. As much as it is enticing, walking in the rain makes you inclined to viral ailments as well. Rainwater is not good for health as it can cause cold and viral infection.
Taking shower immediately after getting in the rain will protect your body from the harmful infections.
Wearing dirty or wet Clothes and footwear
Wet and dirty garment helps in increasing the growth of germs. By wearing dirty and wet clothes you can get skin infection caused by bacteria and fungi.
During this season usually, clothes do not get dry easily because the sky is covered with clouds and the sun shines very rarely. Even if the garments are slightly wet it can lead to microbial growth. Avoid wearing closed shoes as they hold water and makes your foot sodden. Wear waterproof shoes or open footwear.
Always carry an Umbrella or raincoat so that you don’t get wet by rain during monsoon.
Different bacteria and viruses become active in the rainy season. Because rain falls on the garbage heaps too, this gives rise to bacteria that are then carried forward by insects like flies, months or even butterflies. So it becomes difficult to control common diseases like coughs and flu in the rainy season. Stomach flu also becomes common in the rainy season. In worst cases, cholera and dysentery can also be spread.
Cleanliness is the key in order to have a healthy rainy season. Before the beginning of the rainy season, all the garbage heaps and dumps must be removed. There must be active cleaning measures taken in order to prevent the spread of diseases. There must also be proper garbage disposal and the bins and dumps must be emptied every day. In a clean environment, the spread of diseases can be minimized to a great extent.
Also, keeping your house clean is very important during rainy days. Always ensure that there is no water logging in your home because it can be a breeding place for mosquitoes and other harmful microbial infections. Use mosquito repellent to stay away from mosquitoes.
Wash your hands regularly. Always make a habit of washing your hands frequently before and after eating food. Especially during monsoon wash your hand whenever you come from outside.
Keeping your body clean
Earlier we have stressed the cleanliness of the environment. Equally important is the cleanliness of your body. Wash your hands regularly. If you come from outside then washing hands is necessary. Take baths regularly and every day. The flu virus enters the body through the eyes, nose and mouth. Whenever you are sweaty, clean the sweat with a handkerchief and avoid using hands, same is the case with your nose. If you are drenched in rain, it is strongly advised that you take a shower. Wash your hair with shampoo and clean your body with soap.
Avoid street food in the rainy season
Rainy season is not the good season to enjoy street food. Because the bacteria causing insects might be sitting on it. Houseflies and other bacteria causing insects might be sitting on street food if it is left uncovered. It can cause series diseases if such food is consumed by people.
Avoid eating food street vendor. During monsoon, streets and road are full of water that increase the chances of germs to enter the food prepared by road vendors. The street vendors hardly take care of that food. Therefore you should avoid eating food from street vendors.
Healthy and Balanced Diet
It is an ideal approach to keep the nutrient in the body. By having a healthy diet your body will be nourished with proteins, vitamins that make the body strong to fight against infections. During rainy season you should eat green vegetables, fruits, and cereals.
Drink only purified water. Monsoon is the time when you are more vulnerable to waterborne disease the risk of drinking contaminated water during the rainy season is very high. Many harmful microorganisms can enter your drinking water easily. Therefore you must have a water purifier in your home.
Drainage of rainwater
Another thing that can cause dangerous mosquitoes to breed in causing malaria and dengue is the stagnant water. There must be measures taken to drain the rainwater immediately. Start with your household. Check if there is any water caught up in pots or any other container near or around your home. Even in small quantity stagnant water is dangerous and an active breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Electrical safety during the rainy season
Water is a good conductor of electricity. In rainy season open plugs and switches become much more dangerous. Never use exposed, frayed, cracked or faulty wires. Such wires should not be used in any season, but in rainy season a single touch to such wires can send you to the hospital. The power points must be switched off before plugging and unplugging devices. If an electrical appliance breaks down, do no try to open and mend it on your own. Take it to professional people who can mend them.
Before the start of the rainy season, ask a professional electrician to inspect all your switches and electrical appliances. Never touch the switches and plugs with wet hands and feet. Also never overload the power plugs.
Driving in heavy rains
Some precautions must be taken while driving in heavy rains. Have rain vipers checked once before the start of the rainy season. Drive slowly to avoid skidding on the water. Slow driving is necessary in order to avoid splashing water on pedestrians and other cars. The view is marred by the lashing of heavy rains against the windshield to keep the headlights open and drive very carefully.
Other safety precautions in the home during the rainy season
Many rainy season problems sprout up during the rainy season. Here are some checks that you need to make in order to avoid rainy season problems in the homes.
- Before the start of the rainy season check the roofs for leaks and drips
- Make sure that there is no danger of water flooding your home
- Make sure that if you have antennas on the roofs, it is waterproof
- Don’t leave other expensive or important stuff outside that will go bad in the rain
- It is highly recommended to start constructions and repairs after or before the rainy season. During the rainy season, the foundations laid for construction are not concrete enough
