A few days ago, I met one of my oldest friends for lunch. While catching up and talking on a few topics under the sun, the subject of turning a milestone age came up. Apparently, it is quite a big deal turning this number as it is a general perception that a lot of things ought to be sorted in one’s life. It does not help that there is a plethora of articles on the internet telling the reader 25 things that you should have done before you turn 25, 30 life skills to have mastered before you turn 30, 21 life epiphanies you should have had before you turned 21. Ok, I may have made the last one up… Nevertheless, these articles create a pressure in the subconscious mind of the reader when they can barely tick off any of the things mentioned.
As my friend and I discussed our thoughts on this subject – one was freaked out about this while the other was excited (let’s keep who was which a mystery…), it was the belief that we would have figured what we wanted from life at this age. Which we have not. Later that day I wondered that having been an adult for more than a decade, what were the things I had learnt from the greatest teacher aka Life. After much pondering, it was
Age is just a number. Till you have to vote, get married, or order a cocktail
Nobody cares what you’ve worn or looked like at an event or a particular day in the long run. Unless you wore animal prints to work
Trust your gut. It will often speak to you in a soft melodic voice
Always step out of the house with your phone fully charged
Never make decisions when you’re hungry or angry, specially hangry
You have to look around to understand what’s going on. Absence of background music is a curse
Explore what you’re passionate about and take out time to practice it. Provided it is legal
Life is too short not to try something new. Except drugs
